Less than two years after being formed, we are delighted to announce that the Australian Open Access Support Group, formed in October 2013, has now become the Australasian Open Access Support Group, with the joining of all the New Zealand Libraries under its umbrella organisation, Council of New Zealand University Librarians (CONZUL).

Open Access, and the wider Open Scholarship movement are currently some of the most rapidly moving and hotly debated topics in academia both globally and in Australasia. In recent months alone there have been several conferences in Australia on these topics (with more to come), an Australian Government response indicating a possible whole-of-government policy on Open Access, and comment in the media.

It is important therefore that Open Access discussions include a wide variety of perspectives from across the region and we look forward to working with the New Zealand institutions on future initiatives.
