Dr Ginny Barbour, along with Eva Méndez (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid) from the EU Open Science Policy Platform ran an unconference session at the Association for Interdisciplinary Meta-Research and Open Science Conference (AIMOS) 2020 to discuss what could be part of an Australian National Strategy for Open Research. Australian perspectives on developing a national open research strategy

Over the past year, the need for an overarching national strategy in Australia for open research that aligns the many ongoing individual initiatives has become increasingly apparent. There are an increasing number of countries that have developed and are in the process of implementing such strategies.
The Council of Australian University Librarians and the Australasian Open Access Strategy Group are convening a number of webinars to explore further how an Australian national strategy might be developed.

International perspectives on developing a national open research strategy

Strategies for responsible research assessment in the Asia-Pacific region

The Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) is pleased to announce its first webinar for the Asia-Pacific region on Thursday, July 2 at 12:00 PM Australian Eastern Standard Time (10:00 AM China Standard Time). The webinar is open to all and will provide an update from DORA and offer ideas about strategies to implement responsible research assessment practices.
Fair beyond Data

FAIR was never intended to be just for research data. Increasingly, the FAIR principles are being applied to diverse research outputs and hence a variety of organisations from publishers to institutions are involved in implementing policies and processes to support FAIR. This joint CAUL/ AOASG session, facilitated by ARDC, will discuss FAIR from a number of different perspectives and will propose some simple approaches institutions might take to support FAIR.

The case for SCOSS: Creating a secure & sustainable OA & OS infrastructure

The Global Sustainability Coalition for Open Science Services (SCOSS), an initiative of SPARC Europe, works to facilitate crowd funding to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the world’s Open Science infrastructure upon which we have come to depend.
AOASG Executive Committee Chair, Martin Borchert, in his role as Chair of the SCOSS Board, and Angus Cook – CAUL Content Procurement Manager, will co-present the case for the continued support of the SCOSS crowd funding initiative.
The Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) is a founding member of SCOSS. CAUL/CONZUL institutions have provided much needed financial support for SCOSS Round 1 endorsed infrastructure – DOAJ and Sherpa/RoMEO.
SCOSS has recently launched SCOSS Round 2 endorsed infrastructure for crowd funding – OAPEN/DOAB, Open Citations, and Public Knowledge Project (PKP).
Martin will provide an update on Round 1 and will launch Round 2.
Angus will advise how CAUL/CONZUL institutions can pledge and pay contributions via the CAUL Content Procurement office.

Wrap up of 2019 activities and plans & priorities for 2020

Australasian Open Access Strategy Group Chair, Martin Borchert and Ginny Barbour (Director) will present our first webinar for 2020. 2019 was an extremely busy year for the AOASG with an extensive workshop and new member engagement program. Looking ahead Martin will outline the group’s plans and priorities for 2020 and showcase what to expect in the coming months.
