79 journals are listed as having an Australian publisher  in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ); 67 are from New Zealand.

The National Library of Australia hosts many Open Access journals through its Open Publish program, which uses the Open Journals System. The OJS website indicates nearly 1000 journals use the open source OJS for publication in the Oceania region.

CSIRO, through CSIRO Publishing, publishes New South Wales Public Health Bulletin and the South Pacific Journal of Natural and Applied Sciences .

Scholarly associations publish many journals, some are open access. Examples include the Australasian Association for Information Systems which publishes the Australasian Journal of Information Systems, the Australasian Law Teachers Association publishes the Journal of the Australasian Law Teachers Association, the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand publishes Australian and New Zealand Maritime Law Journal and the Australian Physiotherapy Association’s Journal of Physiotherapy. The Australasian Journal of Educational Technology  is published by ASCILITE

Humanitarian organisations also publish open access journals, for example Engineers Without Borders publish the Journal of Humanitarian Engineering.

Some professional organisations also publish Open Access Journals. The Australian Computer Society publishes Australasian Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Research and Practice in Information Technology and Conferences in Research and Practice in Information Technology. The Australia and New Zealand School of Government is a not for profit educational organisation and publishes Evidence Base , a journal of evidence reviews in key policy areas.

Australian National University publishes Aboriginal History Journal, Agenda – A Journal of Policy Analysis and Reform , Australian Humanities Review, craft + design enquiry, East Asia Forum Quarterly and Humanities Research Journal Series through the EPress. ANU eView publishes Burgmann Journal – Research Debate Opinion, The ANU Undergraduate Research Journal, Cross-sections and Medical Student Journal of Australia.
